The Lower Limb Preservation Project was initiated in May 2023 by Ontario Health and the NOHT-ÉSON to address the high rates of avoidable, non-traumatic lower-limb amputations, particularly among people with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. With Niagara having the second-highest rates of limb loss in Ontario—85% of which are deemed preventable—the NOHT-ÉSON and its Indigenous partners identified significant gaps in diabetes care and management in the region. Barriers such as limited access to culturally safe and appropriate services further highlighted the urgent need for holistic, prevention-focused interventions.
